Top 5 Business Reasons to Backup Twitter

by Kristin Dziadul on October 6, 2010

17% of business Twitter users surveyed by email security firm Proofpoint have been involved in investigations due to exposure of confidential, sensitive or private information.  51% of those respondents also noted that they are very concerned about data leakage on Twitter.

As more employees and businesses are using Twitter for both personal and business reasons, it becomes more critical to protect and archive that data. How are you protecting Twitter and your other social media data?

Here are the top Five reasons to backup your Twitter account:

1. Employee Error

Employee error, often the employee managing your social media account, is arguably the leading cause of data loss. Roughly one third of all data loss in businesses is attributed to human error. Errors range from accidental deletions to creating insecure passwords. To prevent losing data if it is accidentally deleted or hacked due to a weak password, backup your Twitter stream.

2. The Unexpected: Fail Whale

Just yesterday, tens of thousands of Twitter users experienced the infamous Twitter ‘fail whale.’ Almost every week, tweet streams go blank, followers/following lists drop to zero and personal tweets go missing for an unknown period of time. To ensure that your data is never actually lost, it’s always a good idea to have a backup. No matter what happens on Twitter,  your data will always be archived.

3. Buggy 3rd Party Programs

If you use Twitter for your company, chances are you have a 3rd party software to update and monitor your Twitter accounts. With the influx of third party programs that connect to Twitter also comes the unavoidable risk for buggy programs that bog down your account and, in the worst case scenario, wipe your account data. The more access you give third party vendors to your Twitter account, the higher the chances are that something will go wrong. To ensure that your data is never lost on Twitter or another application, sign up for a Twitter backup. That way, you can easily restore your data if something goes wrong.

4. The Public Demands It

Whatever is said on Twitter can and will be held against you in court. If your company is making false promises, derogatory statements, incriminating comments, and the like, your company can be sued. To protect all documentation of conversations and messages on Twitter, it is a good idea to have a backup in place.

5. Compliance Regulations Demand It

Earlier this year, FINRA released social media compliance regulations which outlines how to monitor and supervise company social media sites. This came from the understanding that the “use of social media sites by businesses to communicate with customers and the public has grown significantly in the past few years.” To abide by these laws, companies must keep records of their social media activity, which can be done through a backup.
