How To Backup Gmail With Backupify

by Rob on March 10, 2010

Gmail backup was not on the near term roadmap for Backupify at launch, but was (shortly thereafter) our number one request for new services. There has been a bit of confusion around the user interface, and we are working to fix that. In the meantime, if you want to backup your Gmail, here are the steps.

1. Go to the “Settings” page and select the “Manage” link next to “Gmail.”
2. Enter your email address for Username and your Gmail password. Make sure your browser has no auto-filled this with your Backupify password.
3. Click “create.”
4. Now you should see a list of folder/tags/labels with “Inbox” checked. This means that only your Inbox is backed up, and is the default setting. We have found that so many Gmail users leave everything in their inbox, that this works for a large number of people.
5. If you want to backup other labels/tags choose those and then re-enter your information.
6. If you want to backup all of your Gmail, you only need to click the “all mail” box.

Gmail backups are stored in .eml format, which means you can import your messages into any email system. Once we launch zip/export functionality in a few weeks, you will be able to package up all of those Gmail messages and download them to your PC, or push them to the storage system of your choice.

It doesn't look like attachments are backed up. Am I wrong?

Attachments are encoded in the .eml files. If you need to restore an email with an attachment, simply open the .eml file in a mail reader such as Thunderbird and you should be able to save it locally.

Ahh, I'm so used to gmail bundled messages. Have to go to the actual email
in the thread with the attachment. Thanks for the response!

Also, looks like it's only backed up to Jan '08 for my account (very hard to tell since there is no item date, just when it was backed up. Will it keep
accumulating further in the past each backup?

Lastly, a search would definitely be handy, but I'm sure that's not a
priority at the moment. Thanks again for such an excellent service and team.
