We recently ran an analysis of our storage costs for various services that we backup, and it turns out the price for backing up a Twitter account is pretty low. The average Twitter backup is less than 2Mb, so we decided to offer it for free. (sign up here)

There are lots of Twitter backup services out there. To help you decide if our Twitter backup is the right one for you, I want to highlight a few key points about our offering.

1. We use Twitter Oauth, so we don’t have to store your username and password.

2. We backup your tweets, your direct messages, your Twitter friends, and your Twitter followers.

3. We are within a few days of launching a searchable version of your Twitter backup so that you can find old tweets as needed.

4. Our Twitter backup is incremental. Since Twitter only allows us to pull your last 3200 tweets, once you pass 3200, some Twitter backup systems overwrite your backup with the most recent 3200. We append them to the database, so we continue to back up everything and can backup as many tweets as you can tweet. (Note though, that on the day you start, we can only go back 3200 tweets from that day)

5. You can download your tweets to your PC.

6. We don’t require you to retweet that you signed up. We give you an option to tweet about us, and by default it is checked, but feel free to opt out.

7. You own your data. We don’t look at it. We don’t use it. We don’t sell it. We don’t show it to third parties. We don’t do anything with it except store it for you. We believe very strongly in privacy. Even though your tweets are public, all your backups are yours. You can leave us at any time and take all your data with you.

All of that is included in our Twitter backup for free. Why? Because Twitter backup doesn’t take much storage space and isn’t very complex compared to some of the other services we backup. So why pay for Twitter backup when you can get everything you want for free? And if there is a Twitter backup feature you want that we don’t support, send us a note and we will add it to the feature list.

What else is coming? In the short term, more ways to browse, export, and search your tweets. In the long term, whatever you request. So please keep the feature requests coming. Users are our best source of innovation.
