How To Backup Wordpress

by Rob on June 1, 2009

We recently released a Wordpress backup plugin that you can download here. It has two backup options. First, if you aren’t a LifestreamBackup user, you can click the “Full Backup Now” option and then click the “backup” button and the plugin will backup your entire wordpress database and put the file on your server. This allows you to revert to an older copy of the database if something happens to your wordpress installation.

The second option is for LifestreamBackup customers (sign up here if interested) to backup Wordpress to their LifestreamBackup account. We allow backup of multiple blogs to the same account. All you have to do is create a key, and enter that key in the settings page on the Lifestreambackup site and in the Wordpress plugin in your blog. Then, under the “backup options” section, set how frequently you want to back up the blog.

Your backup option is to set how many posts occur before you backup. This is because some people who only publish once a month may want to back up after every post, whereas others who post 5 times a day may only want to back up after every 5 posts. It is up to you.

If you have questions or comments about the plugin, leave them on this post, or send us email to info-at-lifestreambackup-dot-com.

If you prefer not to use a plugin to automate backups, you can find manual instructions for blog backup here.

  • Great idea overall and especially the WP integration. But I'm having a bit of trouble. I have the plugin installed and activated on my WP blog running 2.8. When I try to enter a WP backp key, the form just refreshes and removes the key I entered (but leaves my LSB email). It gives no indication there was a problem, or that it actually saved it. When I try and add my blog to LSB I get an error:
"Your email and plugin key should coincide with credentials from ls-backup plugin settings page of your blog. Please correct."

I have tried this from Safari 4 and FF 3.5, both on the Mac.

And as a product suggestion, it is not clear at all that a key should be CREATED in the WP plugin and I could enter anything I wanted. Many services create a key for you (and email etc) and have you paste the key, which is what I was trying to figure out until I happen to find this page (which is not linked from plugin btw). Just make it clear that the user needs to create the key.
